Air-dropped robot spins down to water, then sails itself, study reports
A Science Robotics paper describes ALBATROSS, a sensor platform that autorotates like a seed after release from a drone and then navigates as an autonomous sailboat.
Researchers have built ALBATROSS, a small robot that can be dropped from an aircraft, spin down like a maple seed to a soft water landing, right itself and then sail autonomously, according to a paper in Science Robotics.
The same rigid wingsails act as rotor blades in descent and as sails on the water, and a fish-tail-like rudder adds thrust in light wind. The authors report the design uses only three actuators and three main sensors.
In field trials in Singapore, the team released the robot from a drone at 150 metres. The authors report autorotating descent, passive self-righting and autonomous waypoint navigation, plus a run of about three hours logging humidity and heat flux. They note the prototypes are not yet suited to open-ocean conditions.
